Boca Grande and Charlotte Harbor

Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

Happy New Years from Florida.

Welcome to “2008”.

We finally got some cold weather but they say it will be brief. It is predicted to be back in the eighties this weekend. Unfortunately most folks have to go back to work or school however many of you are spending the winter down here in Florida.

The cold will actually help trout fishing now that they are open again. Pinfish were so thick you could not use shrimp near the grass flats while it was so warm. Trout and reds will drop off into deeper holes and bunch up. The very low tides help concentrate fish also. Artificials are the ticket for many of us. It’s too cold to get our hands wet except to unhook a fish. With the neat hook removers I don’t even need to touch most fish at all. If it’s too windy you can take a little more time in the tackle shop and catch up on the latest new or new to you gear. The trick to good catching is to choose your weather. The day before a front is the warmest but windy. Fish react to cold weather by going to deeper water. We usually find fish in protected waters because it’s warmer for us and the fish. I am going looking for pompano as soon as the winds back off.

Have a Happy New year. Let’s Go Fishin’ soon. Captain Van Hubbard
