Spanish and king mackerel are hungry and waithing for you!

Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

10-19-08 web report

Weather and fishing are great.

We are so blessed to enjoy our lives here around the Boca Grande area. This week was an extra special reminder. While clients and I were enjoying the great fish catching; hundreds of the biggest Hollywood celebrities were gathering here for a big multi million dollar wedding. Weather is fantastic and temperatures are comfortable.

Monday, Rick and Sue worked a fishing trip into there vacation from Wisconsin. We found a few big Spanish and legal king mackerel but that bite was slower than we liked plus it got very windy so we looked around. We found a school of snook and tried to catch a slot fish because several were in the school. We caught about a dozen snook then ended up with a slot red fish to add to dinner. We enjoyed our treats of eagles, dolphin, manatees, and plenty of birds to add more memories to our day together on Lemon Bay waters.

Our Spanish and king mackerel fishing is red hot. We enjoyed several bites this past week that fish grabbed our minnows as fast as we could cast em out for more than an hour. The fish are ranging from about two or three pound Spanish, up to kings over twenty. There are spinner sharks and little tunny scattered in our day to add variety; fun but very strong fish. We even had a school of huge twenty to thirty pound redfish raise up all around the boat on Wednesday. Plenty of action and fun for friends and family plus the fish are close so no long boat rides. It's nice that fuel costs are down for now. .

Wednesday, October the fifteenth, Captain Bill Miller shot a TV show for his "hooked on Fishing" series aired on Brighthouse Networks aboard the "Let's Go Fishin'" Dorado. His wonderful "she loves fishing", wife, Debbie joined us as it was their thirty-first anniversary. She caught that big twenty two pound redfish, I'll add some photos to web site. We enjoyed an awesome bite that lasted for over two hours and we caught all the fish we could reel in. They were jumping all around the boat most of the time; it was awesome.

Cobia and tripletail are due, especially with the stone crabs trap buoys in Gulf waters. I like to use my trolling motors to ease up into casting range and carefully present bait or lure to them. Lures and flies are great here.

Pompano and their cousin's, permit are welcome treats as they are fun, challenging and maybe the best eating fish we have. They pull like jacks for excitement but taste incredible. I like to use the old traditional, custom round head with small hook Key Largo pompano jigs or the newer metal ones like Doc's Goofy Jigs. Colors can be significant; white seams to work best in the Gulf. I guess it looks like a sand flea. Yellow, pink and even chartreuse all produce for us in other situations, so I mix it up trying different hues and concentrate on whatever works today.

We did enjoy some spectacular tarpon fishing a week ago in October and usually get a hot bite in the with the major south bait and fish migrations. It is hard to guess exactly when this appears but it is fun if you get lucky and hit it; we frequently find silver kings a pest when king fishing.

Don't procrastinate or you'll miss the hot action ‘ole man" winter is knocking. Let's Go Fishin' soon. Captain Van Hubbard.
