Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

Another busy week of good fishing. 6-13-08

We did look for some variety the First of the week but tarpon fishing is still prime time. Monday we went scouting and to try and get some new photos. We found plenty of tarpon but lots of boats too. I decided to check for permit on some near shore structures. We saw several kingfish skyrocket and conditions looked great for permit.
Tuesday Tommy Todd and son Mike drove down from St. Pete. to enjoy their annual Father son Boca Grande fishing trip. We caught some minnows and headed off shore. The winds were strong enough to hold our anchor heading and keep us from roasting. It calmed out mid day but the permit never showed this trip. We did get some action from barracuda and a nice mess of mango snapper for dinner. The Spanish were around and we caught a couple but the kings had disappeared. Fish have fins and tails and can travel fast. We decided to try some tarpon on our way home. We got Tommy hooked up with out many casts and he landed a nice fish but the fish teased us for an hour before Michael got tight. We found several fine schools of fish but even big tarpon don't eat all day long. It was a perfect ending to a great day on the water. They promised not to wait so long till they return.

The rest of the week we targeted tarpon. The fish were on an early bite this past week. They did get back together midday but feed sporadically. Crabs are to hot AM bait and they are hard expensive plus to locate. We have lots of fish and saw several manatees this week also. I wrapped up the trip with a last minute Fathers day trip Friday with a special father and son experience. Dad has dealt with some health issues recently some the trip was extra special. The AM was challenging but we hooked up with a large tarpon right away. It was a monster and wore the whole crew out. We did get her boatside and Frank promised to forward some shots as soon as they get back to Atlanta. I am tired and looking forward to more great action next week. I had a last minute cancellation for Monday and do have some dates open later in the month and into July. Let's Go Fishin' soon. Captain Van Hubbard.
