CAPE CORAL FISHING REPORT:
Week ending April 21, 2018
Water Temp: 78 degrees. Windy conditions this past week pushed tons of solids up into the water column, mucking the water and the fish just disappeared.
Now that the winds have laid and the water clarity is returning to the area, so are the fish. Large Trout, Mackerel and Pompano prowling the channel breaks making nice catches. One day we had three trout catches in a row over 19", all released. Most of the big ones are females laden with eggs.
KINGS and Cobia on Helens Reef, freeline white bait or threads on a mac wire rig for best results.
We could see no tarpon rolling at Foster Point yet we made a nice hook-up on a hundred pounder. We used Larger White bait floated on a 5' / 60 lb mono leader, 7 ought Mutu light Owner circle hook (red) under a tarpon bobber.
Big Blacktip shark hits too.
Tarpon are running along the beaches N/S, along the gulf side of Cayo Costa. We had one hook-up Wednesday. We saw only one roll.
Reports of big Tarpon rollers at Boca Grande Pass are coming in too.
Mackerel hits are many at any given point or break but beware, take lots of hooks cause they bite them off regularly. Mac's are Very Tasty when grilled.
For Trout, try working the sandbar and grass flat edges where the structure starts to dive from 4.5'/ 5' to deeper channel waters. Using a 4' leader under a popping cork, ¼ oz. painted egg sinker covered in glitter over an Owner 3/0 J hook on 30 lb. mono leaders baited with a live shrimp.
Until Next Tide; Enjoy the Magic of Florida Fishing.
