Tarpon are Tough

Capt. Russ Walker
June 22, 2019
Cape Coral - Saltwater Fishing Report

Tarpon all over Foster point just outside the flats and spoils. They have been rolling in 5 to 7 feet of water depending upon the tide. Best bait bite is a 6" freelined Threadfin hooked thru the nostrils, cast out in front of them when they roll. Small 3 to 4 foot Blacktip sharks are taking a lot of the bobber suspended baits. Pesky but fun. Frustrating if you want a tarpon though. They rolled yesterday till 11:30 am then it was over as temperatures soared and the winds calmed.
Threadfins are schooling out front of Cayo Costa on the southern deep end out in front of the Lookout tower. Sabiki will do the trick as it's 15 feet and too deep to cast on them without an extremely heavy net.
Tarpon are fun but you have to out smart them. We were one for three yesterday.
Enjoy the pursuit.
