Fishing Report for the Florida Panhandle

Capt. Alex Crawford
January 19, 2002
Carrabelle - Saltwater Fishing Report

Groupers, groupers and more groupers!!! The most recent mild weather (i.e. low 70's, light and variable) has everyone turned on to the gag grouper bite. We're talking double digit quality fish here. Try going out Southwest from the West Pass about 17 miles until you find clean water and a hard bottom. Chub mackeral and poggies will get inhaled instantly. On a recent trip, one ecstatic angler, Larry Maiers pumped up an 18 pounder out of 85 feet of water. And he did it on a Penn Slammer with a Penn 8500 spinner. Larry sat down and rested for a while before baiting his hook again.

Really nice triggers are stacked like cord wood out there just waiting for you. Try putting 3 small pieces of squid on your small hook, so that when Mr. Trigger sucks one off, the others will hook him. Juvenile red snapper are also on the bite. Use circle hooks in order to release short snappers alive and not gut hooked. When the spring snapper season arrives, the shorts you released will become broiled snapper.

The joys of winter offshore fishing are too numerous to list here in this short report. However, I have to mention one that makes me very happy. The ability to run from the offshore grouper grounds to my dock at WOT, wide open throttle. No bouncing over 4 footers, no salt to eat, just top knots!!!

Until next tide, tight lines,

Captain Alex Crawford
