Fishing Report for the Florida Panhandle

Capt. Alex Crawford
March 21, 2002
Carrabelle - Saltwater Fishing Report

Bull Reds are biting in the Apalachicola Bay. Mullet are back and high jumping, the laughing gulls are laughing and nesting, the magnificent Bald Eagles are feeding newly hatched chicks and Spring is springing on the unforgettable Panhandle coast of Florida. And if you need any other signs, just go to the beach to observe the annual hordes of Spring break revelers.

This week the Bickel family drove all the way from Indiana to Saint George Island in pursuit of some fabulous Florida sunshine and Redfish for the barby. They were not disappointed on both counts. Grandsons, Corey and Chris were the super anglers of the day. Eight year old Corey tied into a monster Redfish on an eight pound Penn spinner and, after a fierce battle of pumping and winding, boated the prize fish. Not to be outdone by his younger brother, Chris baited his hook with the biggest live shrimp in the tank and was justly rewarded with an identical sister fish. On the Boga, both fish weighed in at a very respectable eight pounds. Grandpa, Grandma, Mom and Dad cheered and praised the boys for their superior fish fighting skills. Everyone knows that kids who are exposed to a healthy outdoors orientation are less likely to get in other trouble. It is really fullfilling for this Captain/Writer to watch children bask in the glory of catching nice fish.

A few Pompano and Spanish Mackeral are showing up in the Barrier Island passes. Bonnet head sharks and catfish have been caught this week in the Saint George Island surf. The great eating whiting are still eating fresh dead shrimp in the Saint George Sound. Flounder can be harvested at the mouth of the Apalachicola River on live shrimp. Fishing is good and getting better now. Time to dust off the Winter blues and wet a line.

Until next tide, tight lines and solid hookups,

Captain Alex Crawford
