Carrabelle - Saltwater Fishing Report

On the inshore scene, the water temperature has warmed to the magical 68 degree mark and the bite has really turned on this past week. Florida Panhandle Spring fishing is going strong. Go to the East Pass off Dog Island to find the prized Pompano. Sand fleas and shrimp are your baits of choice. The Spanish Mackeral have started their annual blitz in the St. George Sound and the Apalachicola Bay. Any small flashy lure that emulates glass minnows will get the little macks chomping.
Cobia hunting season is here and they are prime targets along the Panhandle beaches. Three one hundred plus pounders were caught out of Destin last week and the fish have shown up at Mexico Beach. Tip your favorite Cobia jig with some California squid or present a live eel to Mr. Ling and watch your drag sing. At least 60 pound fluorocarbon leaders with super sharp Owner circle hooks will do the job. Cobia steak on the barby with a baste of lemon, garlic butter is the ticket.
Reds are everywhere now and they are on an eating binge. One of my parties this week had a nice catch of slot fish on big large shrimp. Try the passes and the Saint George Island bridge. Trout have picked up at the Saint Vincent Dry Bar. Try chartreuse jigs tipped with shrimp.
Bait is showering everywhere now. Spanish and topsail cats are pushing poggies around the Bay. The pelicans and porpoises are going crazy. Pinfish and pigfish are moving inshore and will become excellent grouper baits.
April and May are the very best fishing months on the unforgettable Florida coast. The sunshine is warm, the people are friendly and the fishing is fabulous. So, what are you waiting for, come get in on the action!!!
Until next tide, tight lines and solid hookups,
