Carrabelle - Saltwater Fishing Report

Now that the water temperature has reached the mid eighties, the summer inshore pattern is here. Trout are on the grass flats and, as usual, the bite is better at first and last light. Reds are stacked in tight to their food sources around oyster bars. Redfish lures are fun, but live shrimp will produce more consistent action.
Offshore, this week has been tough due to an unseasonal abundance of liquid sunshine and some storm cells. We were only able to fish one offshore day, but it was a good one. My clients from Indiana had mother ocean's luck on their side. On the very first drop of the morning, a big frisky pogy got slammed before it even reached bottom. After some major league pumping and winding, including having to pass the rod under the anchor line, the exhausted angler watched as we put the net under a giant sow red snapper. On the Boga the fish registered just over 19 pounds. At the beach house on St. George that evening, the fillets from this fish would feed the entire party of seventeen.
Tip of the week. Whatever it takes to catch and keep quality baits alive is worth the time investment in more and bigger fish. Never leave the dock without your castnet and a supply of Sabiki rigs. With big hardtails and Spanish around in Summer, it is wise to upscale your Sabiki rigs and use heavier tackle and sinkers. You can't catch bait if you are always tieing on a new rig.
Until next tide, tight lines and solid hookups,
