Fishing Report for the Florida Panhandle

Capt. Alex Crawford
November 29, 2002
Carrabelle - Saltwater Fishing Report

NEWS FLASH for immediate release. ALERT, ALERT, ALERT!!! King Mackerel are absolutely everywhere right now. In the 22 years I have fished the unforgettable coast, the Kingfish bite has never been better.

The water temperature at the NOAA weather buoys offshore of the Panhandle is 72 degrees as I write this. The Kings are stacking up with the bait on the offshore reefs, as they slowly move South towards the Keys. This is your last shot at them off the Panhandle, until they return next Spring. That will happen when the water returns to 72 degrees, plus or minus, normally the end of April.

These Fall- run fish are not the snakes of Spring. Fall Kings are bruisers with premier fighting ability. So mean are these bullies, just yesterday I let a 20 something take my prized Aftco gaff away from me. Lucky he came ungaffed and I learned gaffs float.

Commercial King boats follow the Southerly migration. They take thousands of pounds of fish. One amazingly efficient technique they employ is a round up maneuver. They tie the wheel off and go around in circles. No rod and reels here, this is pure, unadulterated meat fishing. This is hand- line trolling with flashy spoons. Specialized tools are used when the fish is yanked into the boat to quickly and safely unhook it to the box.

Pound for pound, Kings are just as fast as Wahoo and that’s saying something. Anyone who enjoys fishing, has to love the pure, natural rush of a King’s first run. It is happening right now. Come get ya some!!!

Until next tide, tight lines and solid hookups,

Captain Alex Crawford
