Fishing Report for the Florida Panhandle

Capt. Alex Crawford
June 8, 2003
Carrabelle - Saltwater Fishing Report

Friends don’t let friends eat frozen fish. Can we talk? Or, schmooze fish matters? Calling all anglers who long for those little latitudes. I’ll tell you that 29 is a very good number, the forgotten coast latitude. It’s where the fish are and that’s cardinal rule number one of fishing. If you long for some string-stretchin’ fun, come get ya some. The biters are here and will make your day.

This week’s report will continue with an offshore slant. Apologies to all the inshore folks, but reality is what it is. Mother nature has decided to cleanse our ecosystems with millions of gallons of H2O. And Mother nature is a fickle mistress and will have her way. Caught some reds and trouts this week and a wayward pompano, but nothing to brag about. Even bass fishing up the river has been tough with dirty water. But the good news is that all the liquid sunshine will end with ideal conditions this next week. At least according to my long range weather models.

With the 15th Annual Bigbend Saltwater Classic coming up this Father’s Day weekend, it is time to pick your target species winner. You say AJ, I say deepwater wrecks like the Endeavor with big pins. Giant gag grouper? Try natural bottom just south of S tower in 135 feet, same bait. Sow snapper? Ditto. Cobia? Pick your favorite of the 5 alphabet towers and be there first. Buy eels. Kings? In at least 100 feet, slow-troll big hardtails on your downriggers. Mahis and wahoo? Run way south till you find a perfect Sargasso rip and pull ballyhoo on blue/white Islanders. May have to go 30 miles for clean water. Competitors, start your engines, but remember to spool new IGFA Ande line and preset your drags at the dock. Weigh ins will be this coming Friday and Saturday. Catch ‘em up boys and girls! OAR is a noble cause. I donated an offshore trip for auction.

It is a gone coastal experience. So, fellow anglers, be passionate about your piscatorial pursuits. Water works wonders and there is no pedigree for success. Go to the “little” latitudes and get hooked up!

Till next tide, tight lines and solid hookups,

Captain Alex Crawford
