Chokoloskee - Saltwater Fishing Report
Slowly we're coming back to life in the guiding business down here... The fishing is great but the customers are few and far between. Yesterday I had Graham Nelson aboard for a day out of Chokoloskee in the Ten Thousand Islands area. He's a skilled fly caster from the middle of our state but hasn't fished the 'glades before. We were on the water about 30 minutes before sunup then tossing popping bugs at one spot or another at first light. Took us a few spots and a few changes of flies before we finally began to score, carefully releasing every fish... The photos will tell the story...

this hungry little mangrove snapper just attacked the fly along a shoreline - and it had lots of company - all just as hungry.

that first snapper was quickly followed by a half dozen small snook until we found this one - a very nice nearly slot sized snook...

as the tide dropped that morning we found ourselves working shallower and shallower... this nice slot sized redfish was one of a few we saw pushing along a mangrove cove in less than two feet of water... Graham spotted the fish, made a perfect cast then slowed down his retrieve just enough for the fish to attack his fly... another great Everglades fish - very carefully released to fight another day...
That morning the only rods we used were an 8 and a 9wt with floating lines. The only pattern that produced was a simple clouser style fly on a 2/0... It's my own "guide's pattern" called a Whitewater clouser - here's a pic - note the wire weedguard on a clouser pattern...

Our day was cut short when I had a spot of motor trouble and we ended the trip. Just nothing like the 'glades for great fishing - and it will just get better and better all summer long if you can put up with hot tropical weather...
