Still Snook on the Beach - Redfish Scattered

Clearwater - Saltwater Fishing Report

Over the last month, catching snook has been productive however there do not seem to be as many large fish available this summer. Last June, numerous groups of large fish were present, and some banner days were had with multiple hook ups on fish over 36 inches. The larger fish being caught this year seem to show up one at a time. That said, there are still plenty of snook on the beach and fishing will remain decent through the next month. As August approaches, expect the bite to slow down as the spawning cycle will be about over and fish will start to disperse…no longer available in the large groups commonly seen during May, June and July. Large whitebait and thread fins have been the most effective baits.
Catching redfish has been a bit of work over the last month. Early in the month, some larger fish were grouped up in a few areas but these seem to have dispersed. A typical day of redfishing now is to plan on actively moving from spot to spot to find scattered fish. Success on most days is the result of catching a few fish from several different locations. Cut fish bait…pinfish, grunts, mullet, ladyfish… are all effective. Live pinfish will get the job done as well. Best success has been fishing mangrove shorelines on the higher tides.
Tarpon should remain a possibility over the next month although fish numbers will be down from May and June. Do expect that fish located now will be more willing to eat…typically the case for fish returning from thier offshore spawn. Good luck and good fishing.
