May 2024 Mosquito Lagoon New Smyrna Beach Backcountry

Capt. Michael Savedow
May 8, 2024
Daytona Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Spring has arrived to East Central Florida coastal and intracoastal waters, as water temps rise, bait fish and game fish migrate north after spending the winter further south along the Florida coast, glass minnows, mullet, sardines and pilchards for bait, Bluefish, Jack Crevalle, Pompano, Ladyfish, Spanish Mackerel are some of the inshore game fish which move north along the coast and in the inracoastal. Spring is also shrimp run time on Indian River, so shrimp are one of the most useful bait, our local residential fish also become more active as the water warms, Black Drum, Snook, Redfish, Whiting, and others are regular spring catches. Earlier in the morning can be good catching again as winter is over with warmer water. Long time regular client Darin from Missouri caught and released a beautiful 28" Black Drum recently with me, at approx 10 lbs a great battle on light tackle …………..

Pompano one of the schooling and migratory fish which travel up and down the eastern seaboard, following the water temperature with the seasons through the year, most travel along the ocean beaches.
