Destin Trout and Reds

Capt. Blake Nelson
May 16, 2009
Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report

Friday 5/15

We caught some nice trout on the grass beds, two that were just over 23" and one 18". Caught them on menhaden under a popping cork. For the rest of the day we targeted reds and ended up catching a dozen, 2 underslot, 2 overslot, and the rest between 24"-27". The first red pained me to throw on ice, a perfect 26 7/8" 7.3 lb beauty. Caught them all on shrimp and menhaden next to docks in 4-5 feet. we ended the trip with a 18" black drum.

The red on the left had 70 spots!

this 30 1/2" took us way back under a dock. We let the line go slack and waited about 45 seconds and he found his way out, the entire leader was frayed.

Went for Kings and ended up with three trout and a red. We started out early trolling for kings and caught one red snapper on a stretch 20 and one King head, no clue what got the rest of it. after about three hours they said they just wanted to catch fish so we packed it up, found some nice bait and hit the docks. In the last hour of the trip we caught about 10 stinking cats, 3 trout around 18-19" and one 19" red.
