Can't Fight the Weather

Capt. Larry Pentel
April 4, 2009
Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report

Whoeever said you can't fight Mother Nature lied-

You can always fight but when you lose to her it's never pretty! The weather pattern has had the fronts coming so fast that we can't get a break from having to fight some part of nature to go fishing. Today will mark the 10th day in a row I have canceled my trips-. It's a beautiful day,the sun is shining (finally),it's nice and warm, but; there is still too much surf for it to be safe enough to launch the boat off the beach- While I want to go as much as my folks I have to keep everyones safety ahead of catching fish (darn it!)

I did get to run a couple of "Kid Trips" up in the Bay when all this weather first started. Too rough and windy in the Gulf but we found plenty of calm water around the inside. While we didn't crush 'em either trip we found plenty of fish for the kids to play with and enough to take home to make a dinner.

His first Trout and proud of it!

The smaller redfish were right where they were supposed to be on 1 trip so everybody got to have braggin' rights and pictures made with fish they had seen and heard about from the "big anglers". We found a school of Black Snappers on the other day that kept 'em going for a while and one young angler had his hands full for what seemed like 1/2 an hour fighting a fine Black Drum on 6# test.

These two had one heck of a battle together--

Kid fishin' is easy! Pretty fun too!

The rain the past week has been of Biblical proportions. I even went so far as to call a religious history friend to see just how big a cubit really is-- I figured if we were going to start building big boats we better have the plans right- If the weather would calm down for a day the Gulf fishing would jump right back into gear- The cobia are still coming thru in all this weather and the spanish are here too- just farther off shore and deeper in the blows-. The Bay may be another story. With all the local Rivers still way above flood stage it will be a while before all the mud, silt and fresh water settles out. The trout and redfish may be on hold for a bit.

I'm just about going stir crazy wanting to be on the water. Hopefully tomorrow will give us all a chance to go chase 'em !!

More Fishing Reports:

Gulf Fishing off Grayton Beach in beautiful South Walton. Red Snapper to Cobia to King Mackeral to Grouper. No need to get up early or drive for an hour to a marina. We will pick you up on the beach and be on a reef or wreck in usually less than 15 minutes. Some of the Gulfs best fishing lies just offshore of the snow white sands of South Walton. We also offer Tarpon trips at Indian Pass during the summer run. July and August have large schools of giant Silver Kings feeding just off the beach.
