Floundering about

Capt. Larry Pentel
November 27, 2014
Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report

That time of the year again here at the beach. The Thanksgiving crowds have arrived and once again it's hard to drive down 30-A without having to slam on your brakes , the weather is uncertain other than the forecast will be wrong and ..the Flounders are HOT ! While I have had to cancel more trips than I have been able to run this week due to surf and rough seas the Folks that have got to go have been treated to a great bite of the tasty flat fish. It's a little different fishing style from our usual bottom fishing and there is quite a bit of finesse involved but once the anglers get it figured out we can really way lay those old flounders. I had one fellow this week (who got it down a little quicker than his buddies) turn to the others and say ' I don't know why you guys aren't helping, this is the 4th fish on the same bait, just drop to the bottom, jig twice and set the hook". While it's not quite that easy the bite has been good with limit catches in about 2 hours if the anglers know the drill. I have had several trips booked by locals who just want that limit of flounder for the freezer. They have not been disappointed !

There are still Jacks, both lesser and greater in fairly close if the weather will let us run to 'em. We caught 2 nice kings last Friday while getting a limit of Flounder on a 3 hr but those may have been the last ones for this year with the past couple fronts that have come through. While we haven't spent a lot of time 2 hook fishing we caught some nice big vermillion Snapper on a few trips where we tried for'em.

I'm sure that the weather will be beautiful next week, after everybody here on fall vacation has to be back home....

Here are a few pics from the past week. I had camera/computer issues and don't have but these two catches to pass on. My apologies to all the other folks that had bragging rights that I can't share. I have proven yet again I am much more adept with a fishing rod than a keyboard......

This trip got cut short after just over and hour but those kids figured out the flat fish. That young lady caught 6 pretty quick and then sat down for a bit 'cause "my arm needs to rest"

Some locals (and a want to be) with a small part of a great 6 hour trip. It took my wife and I 2 hours and 15 minutes to clean all the fish they had !

Happy Thanksgiving ! This is the first year in ages I'm not fishing and get to be involved in all the family activities. I'll be back on the water again tomorrow though if the weather forecast is anywhere near right....
