Pretty Days, Empty Beaches

Capt. Larry Pentel

Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report

The beach has been just beautiful and there is hardly any body in town that doesn't live here. I finished up my boat and tackle projects mid afternoon today and went down and sat on the beach for an hour. Boy !, No wonder everybody comes here on vacation, that was nice !

While I have been rebuilding reels and working on the boat the past couple days I did run offshore 4 days in row on some very beautiful weather days. Way offshore for me is less than 20 miles but still a lot further than I have been fishing all summer. With calm seas and anglers who wanted shots at big fish we made the 45 minute run out and found some great bites every day.

A Fine Rack of Fish- The cuda found the fish in the middle before we could get a a "regular" bait with a hook in it to him--

While the Amberjacks are around they never really did "fire up" for us like I am used to 'em doing in the winter when I usually chase 'em. I checked 3 different big wrecks and all had legal jacks on 'em. I imagine just about any big steel structure will be holdin'.

A Great Catch for Just 2 Anglers on a Half Day

I have pictures up for just 2 days even though we ran out 4 . We had big bites and some great fish on everyday but our landing ratio wasn't quite as good the other 2. I am always worried when I don't have a big board to show at the end of a trip. Both of my other two trips were ecstatic with what they caught and got to battle though and one group didn't even take all of what they caught- giving me and my next door neighbor dinner as well. One advantage to big fish-- A couple will fill the freezer ! I felt bad not having a limit of Jacks and the folks told me it was the best fishin' trip they had been on---

I have trips this weekend and then a couple more before Red Snappers re-open and I'm back to runnin' hard. Lots more reels to put new gears and drags in before then !

Gulf Fishing off Grayton Beach in beautiful South Walton. Red Snapper to Cobia to King Mackeral to Grouper. No need to get up early or drive for an hour to a marina. We will pick you up on the beach and be on a reef or wreck in usually less than 15 minutes. Some of the Gulfs best fishing lies just offshore of the snow white sands of South Walton. We also offer Tarpon trips at Indian Pass during the summer run. July and August have large schools of giant Silver Kings feeding just off the beach.
