Report for Destin, Florida - Nearshore

Capt. Larry Pentel
April 9, 2003
Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report

I'm Back!! To Grayton Beach anyway. The Indian Pass venture went real well and is looking good. We (finally) have fuel and everybody loves it. No more driving an hour to fill up the boat.

On the fishing front things are looking great. I ran a couple of cobia looking trips on the new boat and we were fortunate enough to turn them into cobia catching trips. So far it's been a great run and it looks to continue. The really big fish haven't seemed to come through yet nor have the wads of (15-25#)"clones". The big cold front that came through yesterday will slow the fish down but the current forecast has it being perfect cobia catching weather by the weekend. I have trips booked from Sat. on for a week that are just to catch cobias- I couldn't be happier.

A little further offshore has the bottom fishing doing just fine. I ran a bottom trip day before yesterday and we found fish from right on the beach in 50' of water on out. The inshore wrecks had primarily snapper on 'em (closed till the 15th) but we had several groupers and triggers even off the short water spots on a 4 hr. Last week I ran a 6 hr that let me get a little farther offshore and we found LOTS of fish in 100'of water. Big Beeliners (vermillion snapper), lots of trigers and even a school of amberines. Some good sized groupers also.

The new boat handles wonderfully. It is a lot drier and smoother ride, a little more stable while cobia fishing in the tower and it holds up bow first while bottom fishing.

Back at Indian Pass the inshore bite remains quite hot. One of the guides ran an all day yesterday. He started out in St joe bay and caught 2 dozen Spanish, then took his anglers and boat to St. Vincent sound and caught 20 trout (kept) in the 17 to 22 inch range before the rain hit and ran them in early. The spanish bite is not as phenomenal as it was 2 weeks ago but they are still pretty thick. The trout want to bite but you need to hit 'em when the tides running, they get lockjaw at slack water. Still plenty of redfish too--

So many fish, so little time. And I'm trying to make up for all the fishin' time I lost this winter workin' on the Camp-

More Fishing Reports:

Gulf Fishing off Grayton Beach in beautiful South Walton. Red Snapper to Cobia to King Mackeral to Grouper. No need to get up early or drive for an hour to a marina. We will pick you up on the beach and be on a reef or wreck in usually less than 15 minutes. Some of the Gulfs best fishing lies just offshore of the snow white sands of South Walton. We also offer Tarpon trips at Indian Pass during the summer run. July and August have large schools of giant Silver Kings feeding just off the beach.
