Report for Destin, Florida - Nearshore

Capt. Larry Pentel
August 29, 2003
Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report

Back to beach launch fishing from Grayton and I've been pleasantly surprised. Usually August has the inshore fishing being a bit slow (dog days) but not this year.

I've got to run 5 trips in the 10 days I've been back and we've limited out with snappers on all of 'em. Had quite a few triggers to go along with and some fine groupers too.

Today I had a half day with a Dad and 3 boys-age 6,7,&8. The wind was blowin', there was a swell running and all in all not perfect conditions for kid fishing. I hit a couple of my closest "pet spots" so we wouldn't bounce much or travel long and the plan came together perfectly. We were fishing 25 ft. down in 60 ft. of water and catching some fine fish. Even the kids could land the big snappers (with a little rod holding help) with 35 ft of water between the fish and his house. Several times I had to drive off the wreck when we had a big bite to give all the advantage to the kids. We only fished two rods at a time so an adult could help a boy all the time. Every fish we caught but one was caught with a kid on the handle( Dad wanted one big snapper for himself). Our final tally was 16 red snapper, 3 black grouper, a red grouper and a dozen triggers. We had quite a few throw back groupers also. You know what- those kids didn't lose a single fish to the bottom.

The mackeral seem to be absent from the big rocks so far but I'm sure they will be back soon. The number of triggers is amazing tho. I don't know if this is the usuall fall migration come 6 weeks early or if we'll get another dose of 'em when were supposed to. Either way I went and made a play trip the other day and filled up my freezer with "black beauties". Dinner sure was good tonite-hard to beat fried trigger and cheese grits.

More Fishing Reports:

Gulf Fishing off Grayton Beach in beautiful South Walton. Red Snapper to Cobia to King Mackeral to Grouper. No need to get up early or drive for an hour to a marina. We will pick you up on the beach and be on a reef or wreck in usually less than 15 minutes. Some of the Gulfs best fishing lies just offshore of the snow white sands of South Walton. We also offer Tarpon trips at Indian Pass during the summer run. July and August have large schools of giant Silver Kings feeding just off the beach.
