Report for Destin, Florida - Nearshore

Capt. Larry Pentel

Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report

Definately Fall. The wind has been blowin' keeping us fishin' close to the beach most days. No problem tho, the baits been thick and lots of predator fish in close too.

This morning started out slick with acres of bait on the surface just past the sandbar. I picked my pair of anglers up on the beach at 7:45 with the livewell full. At 8 AM we were 4 miles offshore and hooked up at 8:05. Our first stop yeilded a limit of Amberines (15) and a 160# Bull shark that ate a 'marine on his way to the boat. Nothing like fishing with big baits! After much ado (adoo?) we took the big critters picture , toothy smile and all and released him. Ran out another mile or two to a reef and caught a nice grouper, several throw backs and a pair of good size red snaps. The weather man had called for a nice AM but howlin' tonite. When the wind started to breeze up a little out of the west at 10:15 I told my folks we were runnin' back in to fish near the truck. I guessed right and we made to the lee of the beach in time to catch a handfull of trigs and some more snappers before it got bad rough. We hit the beach at 11:45 just about the time the wind hit 25 knots and the whitecaps started, slid it on the trailer and congradulated ourselves on our timing and catch. Heard horror stories from a couple of folks that tried to stay a little longer and came in about 2 PM looking very wet and beat up!

The snappers have slowed a bit or are moving. I haven't quite figured if the full moon has 'em off or they are starting to migrate. It hasn't mattered any as there are several big schools of amberines that have been wearing my anglers out everyday for the past week or so. The king bite remains sporadic, today we had one hit the fly pole that we missed, yesterday early they were eating anything that hit the water.

Still lots of triggers, hard to get folks to fish for 'em tho when all the "photographic" fish are biting!

Gulf Fishing off Grayton Beach in beautiful South Walton. Red Snapper to Cobia to King Mackeral to Grouper. No need to get up early or drive for an hour to a marina. We will pick you up on the beach and be on a reef or wreck in usually less than 15 minutes. Some of the Gulfs best fishing lies just offshore of the snow white sands of South Walton. We also offer Tarpon trips at Indian Pass during the summer run. July and August have large schools of giant Silver Kings feeding just off the beach.
