Report for Destin, Florida - Nearshore

Capt. Larry Pentel

Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report

Winter has arrived! It's blowin' 25 knots from the NE and 47 degrees outside. I slept in till almost 7 AM and am scared to see what the Gulf looks like a mile out-

The fish knew this was coming as they have bit real well the past week. I fished here 4 days last week thru Sat. and then went to Indian Pass and ran three days over there.

Grayton/Destin: The triggers are on just about everything. I bet you could stop and fish a beer can on the bottom and it would be holding a few. The kings are still here also. BIG kings too, we had a 30#, a 37#, and a 40# all on 4 hours last week. Also had a Mahi and a Black fin Tuna off beach spots. The groupers bit real good up to the full moon and then got lock jaw the past few days. Still lots of amberines as well. We were trolling for kings on Fri., caught a 'marine and 100 of his buddies followed him to the boat. We had our limit (20) in 1/2 an hour. All in all just darn fine Fishin'.

Went to Indian Pass for the first time this fall Sat. night and fished Sun, Mon ,Tues. I am pleased to say the fish haven't changed thier habits at all. The white shrimp are running strong and the trout are balling up the shrimp in the afternoon making for some incredible bites. We had a great catch Sunday with a limit of fish and landed 2 over 20"- pulled several more big ones off. Monday had lots of bites from smaller fish but we still managed to fill the board with keepers ( over 15"). Tuesday was the day tho. My folks wanted to chase redfish so we went way up in the back country and found a lot of fish up in a foot of water. They caught thier limit after a brief "learning period" with 1 being right under 27". I saw several fish in the 15# range in a shallow water but none of those made it to the boat. After a brief pause to pick up oysters for a snack we ran down the bay in time for the Trout. We found a flock of birds going wild bombing the bay for shrimp that were running from the trout. For probably an hour it was a fish every cast. My folks would miss 2 or 3 bites and then stick one. I was slinging fish back in the water as fast as I could just taking time to throw a bigger one in the box every now and then or put a new grub tail on a hook. We left 'em biting ! it was 4 miles back to the ramp and the sun was going down. My folks said it was the most fish they had ever caught in a day ( we left at 1 PM) and they have been fishin' all over. They also said those Lagoon oysters were the best they had ever had, I have to agree with 'em that one.

No excuses- go fishin'. The Beach has Blues, spanish and skippies all feedin' for winter, no boat needed. Some Bull reds in the surf too.

More Fishing Reports:

Gulf Fishing off Grayton Beach in beautiful South Walton. Red Snapper to Cobia to King Mackeral to Grouper. No need to get up early or drive for an hour to a marina. We will pick you up on the beach and be on a reef or wreck in usually less than 15 minutes. Some of the Gulfs best fishing lies just offshore of the snow white sands of South Walton. We also offer Tarpon trips at Indian Pass during the summer run. July and August have large schools of giant Silver Kings feeding just off the beach.
