Report for Destin, Florida - Nearshore

Capt. Larry Pentel
April 4, 2004
Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report

The cobia run started in earnest about a week ago and the fish showed good for 3 days until the last cold front. It's blown up out of the West everyday since and the cobia have pulled thier patented vanishing act.

On the bottom scene the picture is looking pretty good. LOTS of Snapper around for the opening in 10 days. Yesterday I ran a bottom trip and we had 2 in the 12-14# range that hit Grouper baits. Two days ago one of my anglers had one we guessed at 25# that hit a grouper bait in 60 ft. right up by the beach. Quite a few triggers around and the groupers bit pretty good before this full moon so the bottom trips have been coming in with a good box even with Red Snaps closed. Vermillions are still open and there has been a good movement of them also. Yesterday we had a dozen or so fine ones with 1 going about 4# ( yes, in 85 ft on a half day a 4# beeliner).

For those closer to the beach the pompano have finally arived. While this west wind has slowed them it hasn't put a stop to 'em. I even caught one the other evening while on the beach watching the sunset. Some BIG bull redfish in the surf also. I have seen dozens of 'em in the gully while looking for cobia. Saw one today that was probably 45#. Have heard a bunch of stories of big ones being caught by surf fishermen, have also heard the local grouper trooper has issued 68 citations for possesion of oversize redfish. Come on folks, when they get that big they aren't worth eatin' any way. Remember, 27 inches max, 18 inches min.. Watched a fellow today that had one hooked out of a kayak. Another boat finally went over and helped him ( took his rod away) land the fish. The kayaker said he had fought it for an hour and a half.

Bottom fishin' tomorrow AM and hpoefully this wind will switch to the East in the PM ( the weather man says so but he lies) so we can get back to seein' cobias.

More Fishing Reports:

Gulf Fishing off Grayton Beach in beautiful South Walton. Red Snapper to Cobia to King Mackeral to Grouper. No need to get up early or drive for an hour to a marina. We will pick you up on the beach and be on a reef or wreck in usually less than 15 minutes. Some of the Gulfs best fishing lies just offshore of the snow white sands of South Walton. We also offer Tarpon trips at Indian Pass during the summer run. July and August have large schools of giant Silver Kings feeding just off the beach.
