Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report

Right on Schedule
The beach water temp hit 68 degrees 2 days ago and all of God's finny critters are reacting just the way we love 'em to.
I have not had a chance to spend the day cobia fishing yet but have spent a little while looking after bottom fishing twice the past few days. Both days we found a fish but alas, neither wanted to play. Capt Sam Wesley caught the first cobia off Grayton day before yesterday. He found a pair and caught one about #45. The pier in Ft Walton saw 7 yesterday and landed one .I'd say the run is officially ON--
The spanish have shown up also with a lot of fish allready in the Bay- One of my neighbors on Eastern Lake went to "town" (destin) to put in and caught a good mess North of the Bridge on Sunday.
I have mainly been running "kid" and family trips the past week. We have been doing real good with lots of pinks, some triggers and some good grouper bites each day. Today had Granma, daughter and 2 grandkids (9 & 12. We came in on a 4 hour with 2 nice Black Groupers, 2 Scamps, 6 Triggers and WAY too many pinks for me to clean-- Needless to say everybody was happy (and tired).
Saturday I ran 3 of my "regulars" and we blasted way offshore ( for me anyway) 'bout 18 miles. We found a school of A. J."s and caught 4 of those before chasing Groupers. We went to dig the bottom and succeded in catching too many!-We had to throw one back at about #10 because 2 fellows brought up fish at the same time and we only needed one more to limit out. The one we kept weighed #25 on my hand scale! The biggest Red Grouper I have seen in a couple years. They seem to be making a comeback from the red tides and hurricanes. Same thing with the scamps- we have started catching a bunch that are just a "fudge" too short- That's good - job security for next year.
With all the fishing I have done in this area over the past (almost 50 years!) I did something I had never done last Wednesday. The surf was too big to beach launch so I cancelled my charter and came home around 8;30 AM. My neighbor was just leaving to go fish West Bay and invited me to come along to chase trout and reds. No big deal, caught plenty of those and even taught this fellow how to rig and what they want. They way we got to 'em was totally differsnt tho---. We loaded his 2 kayaks into his Whaler and ran about 5 miles upp the Bay to a big (shallow) Bayou. Got out of the Whaler that draws a foot and a half and into the little boats that draw 4 inches- paddled over a shallow bar and into a 2 foot hole that was loaded up with fish that had not been harrased by any one. In an hour and a half I caught 21 trout, 1 redfish and broke off another red- no telling how many I missed. The cool part was when you hooked a good fish you got towed around even with 8# test! A 7# red towed me for 15 minutes before I could get him up close and personal. What a blast- always ready to try something new.
Would not NOT want to do it in the middle of summer when the Bull Sharks are thick in the Bay tho!!!That might be too much exitement!
If you don't allready have game plan to get out in the water you need to have your pulse checked!!
