Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report
Okay- It's official, Spring has finally arrived. There are Spring Break kids all up and down 30-A and some of 'em are even swimming in the ( 60 degree) Gulf ! While it's rough again now, we actually had 4 beautiful, sunny, calm days in row !
I got to run 3 of the 4 calm days and we had great catches every trip. Still plenty of good sized (20 to 35#) Amberjacks around. All the Red Snapper you can release at whatever size you want to target. Good bites of Vermilion snappers if you get on the "right" rock and some pretty big triggers mixed in occasionally also.
These guys have been fishing with me for 9 years and have "filled the box" quite often. While we only kept 4 of the 20+ Jacks they landed they said it was the best fishing trip they ever had !

These guys are buddies of the fellows from the day before. They flew in from Arkansas just to get in on the action!
The groupers seem to be moving inshore also.
My wife proved she still has the nack by catching half a dozen big triggers and a Jack while on a trip with my neighbors.
At 61 degrees the Gulf is still quite cool for the 10th of March. The forecast , while calling for it to be too rough to fish for the next several days, has the air temps pushing 70. If we can get a few sunny days at 70+ the gulf should warm up fast. Even so, look for a later start to cobia and mackerel this year than usual. They have been doing this for a living for thousands of years and will still be here, just a week or so behind the usual schedule.
I (finally) heard of a few trout being caught in the Bay. If we don't get a few inches of rain from this system going through right now they may start to bite a little. I also heard of a couple Pompano being caught, one at 3.35#. Now, I don't know if these were the first of the spring run fish or "leftovers" coming out of the Bay. I'm thinking they were probably fish that wintered in the bay and came out to see if anybody else had shown up yet. I think the gulf needs to come up a few degrees more for 'em to start moving in from the south. Still some nice "oversized" Redfish in the surf tho.
