Tarpon & Tripletails

Capt. Larry Pentel
July 19, 2010
Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report

Just got back to Seagrove from 9 days at Indian Pass. I got to run 6 Tarpon trips and we put 5 to the boat and jumped off one more. The biggest fish was about 165# and the smallest about 100#. There seem to be plenty of fish but they have not really "ganged up" any where. Spending the time to run and look for a feed seems to be the best option this year-

We also got to catch quite a few Tripletails with the biggest at 19#. There is miles of BP "sponsored" boom out in the Gulf, St. Vincent Sound and Apalachicola Bay. While it's great to have all these "Fads" out to hold the fish they sure are hard to get the 'tails off of ! We broke off quite a few nice fish to the booms.

I also got to go scallopin' 2 different days and I am glad to say there are plenty of 'em in St Joe Bay. They aren't real big yet but there should still be plenty to get a month from now when the size of the meats has doubled. I've said for years that they should wait to open the season till August 1st and then leave it open till the water temp hit 72 or so-- That way they could grow up to full size before being harvested by the bucketfuls !

I'm back to Grayton tomorrow to chase Snappers and the like. So many fish, so little summer !! I hope to be able to get back to the "Pass" in a few weeks and get some more shots at the "Tails and Tarpon !

My camera battery died the first day over there so I don't have any pics-- I couple of my anglers said they would e-mail some and I'll pass 'em along if they do--

Still no sign of oil other than all the contractors running around scamming BP here and at the "Pass"

More Fishing Reports:

Gulf Fishing off Grayton Beach in beautiful South Walton. Red Snapper to Cobia to King Mackeral to Grouper. No need to get up early or drive for an hour to a marina. We will pick you up on the beach and be on a reef or wreck in usually less than 15 minutes. Some of the Gulfs best fishing lies just offshore of the snow white sands of South Walton. We also offer Tarpon trips at Indian Pass during the summer run. July and August have large schools of giant Silver Kings feeding just off the beach.
