Estero Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

The fishing this past week in and around Estero Bay was quite good. The nearshore reef was on fire with spawning sheepshead in the 3-4 lb range. Shrimp tipped jig heads worked best for them. Anglers can also pick up flounder, snapper, Spanish mackerel, and the occasional gag grouper with this method. Just remember that the grouper must be returned for another day. The passes are starting to fill up with Spanish mackerel. Anglers can cast shrimp tipped ¼ oz jig's for them with a slow retrieve. Anglers should look for them in 5-8 feet of water. You will also pick up pompano, sea trout, sand trout, and lady's with this set-up. The back bay bite was tougher, but trout, ladyfish, sheepshead, jacks, and some reds were all a possibility. Shrimp under popping corks worked best for the sea trout in 2-5 feet of water over the grass. Locate the cleaner water for your best chance for some for dinner. This set-up works for ladyfish and jacks as well. The redfish action seemed to be all up around the mangroves on higher water. Shrimp tipped 1/8 oz jig heads works fine.
