Estero Bay report

Capt. Jon Fetter
September 12, 2013
Estero Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

The word for the week is redfish. While everyone is still chasing snook round the redfish bite is crazy good. The reds continue to school up and are moving in and around the mullet schools. Find the mullet and you will find the reds. If artificial's are your thing, the topwater bite is great in the am low tides on the grass flats near the oyster bars. Rapala skitterwalks and heddon spooks are working great. Anglers can also throw gold spoons onto the oyster bars and into the mullet schools. Once the tide comes in switch gears to jerk baits and sub surface plugs for action. Cut ladyfish and shrimp tipped jig heads have worked quite well for those live bait fishermen in the same situations. Also, anglers can use that left over frozen shrimp they have had in their freezers since last winter. The snook bite has been very good with good numbers of fish, but slot fish have still been elusive. Free lined white baits or pinfish on 2/0 circle hooks thrown up around the floating docks or mangroves near good moving water is the ticket. Chum them up to get them going then hang on, there have been some over size fish mixed in. The nearshore reef action remains very good as well. Spanish mackerel, pompano, snook, and even some gag grouper are daily catches. Cut bait on the bottom works best for the gag's and snook, while free lined shrimp works well for the mac's. The pompano will take shrimp tipped jig heads all day long.
