Estero Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

With the a.m bite in the backbay slow with the outgoing tide, the place to go for action is the nearshore reef. There is quite the mixed bag with snapper, sheepshead, Spanish mackerel, grouper, flounder, grunts, ladyfish, and the occasional pompano. Shrimp tipped jig heads will work just fine for all of them although the Spanish seem to prefer free lined baits better. There are also a few goliaths out there so be prepared to lose a few fish and the tackle to go along with it. There is still plenty of nice whitebait off the beaches and the afternoon incoming tide has provided some good opportunities for redfish and snook. For redfish fishing the mangroves and oyster bars with free lined white baits or shrimp tipped jig heads is the ticket. Anglers can also try cut baits like ladyfish for redfish on the grass flats near the oyster bars. This takes some patience but when the scent gets out the fish are hungry and willing to eat it up. As for snook, try fishing the floating docks with free lined white baits on 3/0 circle hooks or the oyster bars on high tides. The sheepshead are starting to begin their winter time feeding habits and can be found along the mangrove islands, oyster bars, and other structures. Downsize you hooks to #1 add a #2 split shot and just tip with enough shrimp to cover the hook. This will increase your chances for the stripped bandit.
