Estero Bay Report Week of April 23rd

Capt. Jon Fetter
April 26, 2013
Estero Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

The weather has started to turn in our favor warming the water and heating up the fishing. There is a presence of bait on the beaches and around the bridges and the snook are hungry and ready to eat. Free lined white bait around the floating docks and mangroves on high water has produced to good numbers of these linesiders. 3/0 circle hooks with 30 lb fluorocarbon leader will be plenty for these guys. Fishing the lighted docks at night has produced some big girls in the upper 30 to lower 40 inch range. Anglers need to beef up their tackle to 60 lb leader to pull these big fish out. The redfish bite remained pretty good this past week as well. Shrimp tipped jig heads thrown up around the mangrove edges on high water proved the best method. Anglers can also try using a float and letting the tide move the baits along the edge. There has been a decent tour bite over the grass flats in 3-5 feet of water. Shrimp under a popping cork is the go=to method. You will alos pick up a good amount of ladyfish and jacks while doing this. The nearshore reef is really starting to heat up. Spanish mackerel, flounder, sheepshead, snapper, trout, jacks, and even the occasional grouper are starting to bite. Shrimp tipped jig heads worked near the bottom produced a good number of these species while cast and slow retrieve seemed to work best for the mackerel. Free lined live bait will also work for the mac's and the grouper love them. Get them to the bottom and get ready.
