Estero Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

The fishing remained pretty much status quo for this past week as the backbay is still flooded with dirty brown water. Scent is the way to go back in the shallows where redfish have been taken on cut ladyfish and pinfish. Circle hooks with no weight has been the go-to set-up. Anglers best bet is on high tides up along the mangrove edges or oyster bars. There has been a good sea trout bite over the grass flats in 2-4 feet of water. The bite seems to be better near the passes or where the water is moving, with shrimp under a popping cork the best method. The near shore reefs continue to be where the best action is with daily catches of Spanish mackerel, trout, grouper, pompano, and ever a few flounder. Shrimp tipped jig heads work best for the bottom dwellers while cut bait works great for the gag's. The mackerel will gladly take free lined shrimp thrown into the large schools of thread fin herrings which are abundant over the reefs. The days heat up fast so get out early, apply your sunscreen, and drink plenty of fluids.
