Estero Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

All the rain and run-off that we have received in the past week has really put a hold on the fishing in and around Estero bay. The dirty, brackish water in the back bay has made fishing for reds problematic. They will however take cut bait, i.e. ladyfish and threadfin herrings but anglers must be patient. Give an area at least 30 minutes before moving on and don't be afraid to throw some smaller chinks out to entice the feeding. Once the scent gets out they will feed for a while. The sea trout bite has been slower also, but the key is to find some cleaner water in 3-5 feet near the passes. Shrimp under popping corks is the best method. The one positive has been the snapper bite, fish any blown down trees or submerged structure and you will find keeper mangroves. Shrimp tipped circle hook #1 seem to work best with a #3 split shot. Snook have been feeding well around the mangroves and floating docks on higher tides with strong tidal flows. Free lined white baits or pinfish seem to be the bait of choice. 2/0 circle hooks on 30 lb leader will work fine. The nearshore reefs have been slow also due to the cloudy dirty water, but snapper, grouper, and sharks don't seem to mind. Cut bait for grouper and sharks will work while shrimp tipped circle hooks work for the snapper.
