Fishing Report for Estero Bay

Capt. Jon Fetter
January 23, 2014
Estero Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

This cold weather this past week made early mourning fishing quite interesting, but some o the fish didn't seem to mind. The sheepshead are spawning and willing to take #1 circle hooks tipped with shrimp. Anglers should add a split shot to keep the bait on or near the bottom. Remember they have a really soft bite so keep the line taught and be ready for the bite. Fish around structure like dock pilings, blow down near mangrove islands, or even oyster bars for this is their hang out. There has also been a decent seatrout bite in the 2-5 feet water depth. Shrimp under a popping cork or paddle tail grubs worked slowly is the ticket. Work the grass flats near the passes or with good moving water to increase your chances. As the water heats up toward late mourning hit the mangroves and shallow oyster bars for redfish. Try cut ladyfish or shrimp tipped jig heads. Be patient as it might take a while for the fish to pick up the scent.
