This week in Estero Bay

Capt. Jon Fetter
August 29, 2013
Estero Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

This past week the word that summarized the fishing was WOW!!! The redfish bite is crazy god now with fish staging on the grass flats on low tides and can be caught with just about anything. Shrimp tipped jig heads, pinfish under floats, or cut ladyfish will work fine. As the tide comes in they move to nearby mangrove islands and oyster bars. Here anglers can try pinfish under floats, free lined whitebaits, cut ladyfish, or shrimp tipped jig heads. If snook is what you are looking for they are hungry and feeding very well on free lined whitebait or pinfish. Work the floating docks or mangrove shorelines near the passes where the tidal flow is strongest. They really like that fast moving water. They also seem to be hanging out on the beach shorelines in the passes as well. But remember they are still closed until September 1st, so get your pictures and return them back to the water. There is also a very good trout bite over the grass flats in 2-4 feet of water. The key to locating them and getting them to bite is moving water near passes. Shrimp under popping corks will work best, but artificial like rapala skitterwalks or zoom jerk baits will work just fine. Fishing the passes this past week produced good catches of ladyfish, sharks, pompano, and a few trout. Bottom bouncing shrimp on jig heads seemed to be the ticket. The nearshore reefs have also been producing quality as well as quantity. Spanish mackerel, trout, pompano, snapper, sharks, and even a few grouper are daily catches. Cut bait works best for the bottom fish, but free lined shrimp will work for the mac's.
