Winds made the bite soft

Capt. Greg Stamper
May 28, 2015
Estero Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing was good early in the week for redfish in Estero bay, however the bite was much tougher Sunday and Monday. Redfish were still being caught on the tides that had good moving water but Mother Nature had the winds pushing against the flow many times this week making the water flow slower, and the bite softer. Snook fishing continues to be good both in the backcountry and along the beaches as schools of pilchards aka "snook candy" begin to show up thicker and thicker. Using free lined snook candy on 2/0 circle hooks got the job done for fish up to 34". Most of the beach snook will be cruising very close to the shore so keep your bait in the first 10 feet and you'll do just fine. Mackerel although small are hanging out in 4-6 feet of water just outside of where the trout are posting up and occasionally take the shrimp under a Cajun thunder popping cork meant for the trout. A few random yet interesting species have been caught this week like baby mutton snapper while fishing oyster bars and flats for reds and snook and the occasional sawfish.
