July Fishing Forecast for the 10,000 Islands
July air temperatures can hover in the high nineties which can bring the overall water temperature up to a very warm 86-88 degrees during the day. Daily rain can be expected late in the day, tending to cool things down a bit each afternoon.
You will typically find that the speckled sea trout's bite will remain steady through July. They are smaller than winter trout, but they can be found in substantial numbers in July. Speckled sea trout like both artificial baits such as Berkley Gulp shrimp and natural baits like live shrimp. Trout can usually be found during the moving tides out on the flats.
If you are on the hunt for snook, then you can find them along the near coastal mangrove and the hard bottom shorelines around this time, rather than the backcountry. Live pilchards and thread herring on a circle hook are the best for snook. Bring your cast net out to get some live bait on the flats.
Redfish can be found along oyster bars and along the mangrove-lined shores. Redfish prefer live shrimp under a popping cork and are often found on the incoming tides when the oyster bars flood with the rising water. This is also the baiting method used on most charters.
Tripletail also can be found at this time of the year and are usually hanging around markers, downed trees, and other structures. They also love live shrimp on a circle hook. Permit and cobia can be found around offshore structures and silver dollar sized crab is enough to attract the permit.
Mangrove snapper are decently sized during this time of the year when you compare them to their size the other parts of the year. If you are looking for them, they can usually be found among the mangrove roots and love live shrimp and will excitedly gulp them up.
During July, you may also see an abundance of sharks, and the sharks tend to go for ladyfish, so catch a few ladyfish on the flats and send them out on a 8/0 hook on a wire leader. Look for sharks in the same areas on the flats in just 3'-5' of water. Alongside the sharks, tarpon are also present and looking for ladyfish, thread herring, and pilchards around the flats early morning and early evening.
