Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

05-13-12

I fished the Stamps today, Carl, Taylor and Nathan out of Flamingo , we had a fun day of hooking Snook on top water lures both hard and soft. The Trout bite was okay with a couple big ones. We had some wind and made the best of it late in the day. Our final 2 bites were at the same time. We had a Snook going one way and a 130 lb Lemon Shark going the other. The Snook jumped and threw the bait so we chased down the Shark. Once we got some pics we called it a day.

I am with Ross and Danny today at Flamingo they are here from Chicago for a couple days of fishing and golf. There were some heavy storms south and west of Flamingo so we stayed out front. We threw top waters, jerk baits and twitch n raps and caught allot of fish, but the Snook bite wasn't here today. The conditions made it tough but they had a good time.

What a difference a day makes! I am with Rick and Kathy Widener today at Flamingo this morning, I started out my day the same as yesterday with a few storms around and very little boat traffic. I worked Snake Bite channel with topwater and Gulps! Rick was first with a 6 or 7 lb Redfish on a Gulp, as I was reaching for it a big Bull Shark came up and ate it whole. It was cool to watch bu to close. Kathy was next she was bouncing a Gulp off the bottom and got slammed, the fish pulled and fought for about 6 minutes. I was worried about loosing the fish to another Shark because it was fight so hard and long. The fish surfaced and we saw why it was fighting so hard, it was a 40 inch Snook! I reach down and grabbed it really think that big Shark was close. We took some photos and Kathy rubbed it in to Rick, they are really competitive. Rick hooked another Red and again the Shark ate it. Kathy landed a Red and then the Tarpon showed up , we cast and cast but no luck. I ran west and found a school of Pilchards which I netted. We set up and started fishing live baits in the mangroves, for 2 hours we caught a Snook or a Red on every cast. The snook were all cookie cutter 30-32 inches, the Redfish varied in size from 23 inches to 30 inches. This was a day I took advantage of the circumstances that were dealt and it paid off.

I am with Rick and Kathy again this afternoon @ the Government Cut area, I Netted some Mullet on the way out and and we went to work. I rigged a mullet and trolled my way out of the cut, we had several cuda's cut our bait in half. We had drifted out past the rocks and I was reeling in a mullet pretty quick when a Tarpon in high speed pursuit came up and ate it. I opened the bail and passed the rod to Kathy as the fish peeled off line after a minute or so the fish let go and all we got back was a scaled mullet. We had 2 other fish eat or knock them out of the water but its like they were playing with them. I tried to fish the inlet but the 20 mph south wind was killing us. We went into the bay and fish the bridge, after a half hour rick hooked up but got wrapped around a piling. Rick called it at that point.

I am at Haulover today with my daughter Nicole and her Pit crew for her racing team. Manny and Emilio keep her race car running and they like to fish so she set it up. I just wanted to bend rods and keep them busy so we stayed in the bay. It din't take long and we had a double hook up, one was a 2 1/2 lb Pompano we caught Jacks, Cuda's,Trout and a bunch of Ladyfish. By 11:30am they were done so we called it a morning.
