Catch bait go catching!

Capt. Jim Hobales

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

092014

I am fishing the Day on the Bay Tournament with John Poorman (J.P.) his son Tyler and his friend Luke out of Flamingo. We got out early to catch bait, while I was throwing the net I had Tyler and Luke throwing top water lures for Trout. It didn't take long we had bait and Trout so now we need to go after the other species. It was a good day we had a bunch of Snook up to 28 inches, Snappers to 14 and a 40 inch Tarpon. We didn't land the other species we needed and it wouldn't matter at the end of the day because we got back 45 minutes late and our catch didn't count. If it did Tyler had enough points to win top angler and big Tarpon. It was Tyler's first Tarpon and also had a Backcountry Slam!

I am back at Flamingo today with Rick and Kathy Widener, there was a tournament going on so I ran to the west and fished the Gulf of Mexico. It was slow all morning and then I found the mother load of bait (pilchards). I fished everything and got killed by Jacks and Ladyfish on every cast. We had a couple big fish on top water plugs only to get eaten by Sharks. We had a big Tarpon eat a live mullet but not the hook. Once the tide changed and it started to go out the bite was crazy, we had double and triple hook ups for 2 hours. We lost count probably around 40 or so Snook and a couple Redfish thrown in. Rick had the Big Snook of the day with a 36 incher.

This morning I am with Rick and Kathy again and we start out on the baby Tarpon. These fish were thick but moving around really fast making it tough to get a perfect shot. We ended up with 4 hook ups but no caught fish. I found Pilchards again today and put them to work quickly because we had a really bad looking storm coming at us from the south. We got up on a couple shorelines and caught a few Redfish and Snook and had Tarpon eating next to the boat. Kathy also had a Trout giving her a Backcountry Slam 2 days in a row. We headed towards the dock as the storm was barreling down on us.We looked at the radar and they decided to call it!
