Everglades days / Biscayne nights, 14 July

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Still dividing my time between daytime and night-time charters (in the heat of summer, it makes good sense...). Not many night charters recently, so here's a photo from my last one.....

That's local angler (mostly...) Nate Mayl, hooked up on a nice tarpon with a 9wt rod... the fish just took Nate to school (and that rod didn't survive the contest..)..

Out of Flamingo we're finding lots of snook and small tarpon along the Gulf coast. On my last trip, Tuesday, (a solo exploring day - at least that's my excuse...) I lost two nice snook to sharks that even took the lure the fish was hooked on... The Everglades in summer can be challenging with almost as many sharks as everything else - and they're all super hungry... Inside, in Whitewater it was speckled trout up to about 20" and the occasional very nice sized pompano. Here's a pic or two (and both were invited home for the table...).

We don't get that many pompano in the interior, but every one is on the large side - this one weighed in at just over 3lbs... All of the fish that day were taken on small lead heads with Gulp tails. Every fish seems to be willing to hammer them -all day long...

Along with the trout and pompano, I found large numbers of mangrove snapper in the rivers and river mouths - -but none of the larger ones... I also worked some shallow areas for tripletail - but most of the spots were barren. I finally found one spot holding a few -then caught and released four or five -the biggest were just a half inch short at 14 1/2" long...

When the tide is right the fish are quite a bit bigger....

The good news this week is the welcome appearance of the first schools of finger mullet around river mouths. The mullet and the schools themselves will both grow in size and numbers the rest of the summer. By September they'll be everywhere along the coast...

Be a Hero... Take a kid fishing!

Tight lines,
