Fall Mullet run means fun!

Capt. Jim Hobales

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

091711

I am with John Riordan and his 2 small daughters Katy and Kelly, we started out casting at some rolling Tarpon. This only lasted about an hour because the girls wanted to catch fish and weren't fishing their dad was. I netted some finger mullet and put a couple out we had 3 hits with no catches, all bait came back scaled as if it were Tarpon. We ran down to the grass flats and put out a chum block and got the fish turned on. These girls are between 5 and 7 years old I guess and they both can cast for themselves. They caught Trout up to 22 inches, Snappers to 15 inches, Cudas, Jacks, Blue Runners and Sea Robins. They couldn't get enough but had a party to get to, which was more important than fishing!

I am with George Shipley in Biscayne Bay this afternoon and I am trying to get him a Tarpon! First stop showed allot of promise, the Tarpon were rolling and blowing up baits. I netted some Herring that were getting blown out of the water as they pushed across a flat, we almost had a Tarpon land in the boat that had sky rocketed. I wanted to hit a couple spots before dark so we left but it was just to rough and windy to fish them. We did catch about 30 Jacks, Trout and Cudas while looking for Tarpon in the mullet schools. I made a run to a fun little spot and started live chumming with the small Herring. We got some Snook turned on chasing the baits, George cast a Twitch n Rap and got hit by a Snook. After a short run it let go and they were gone. The Tarpon were thick and we continued cast at them, George had several more swirls and hits but no fish in the boat. We live chummed some more but they had no interest, until I put out a Sand Perch. It got hit hard and ran us into the pilings but that's the way it goes. I went back to the first spot all the baits were gone and all we managed were a few small Trout, by know it was blowing 25 mph and it was over.
