Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report
Hurricane Matthew has come and gone and most South Floridians have cleaned up what little mess that Matthew caused. Now we are ready to start fishing again. Matthew has pushed a ton of mullet schools down thew coast and lots of hungry predators are following them. This morning a fishing buddy of mine called in a panic. He wanted to tell m,e about the unbelievable bite that was happening at Deerfield Fishing pier but he was fishing while he was calling and got a big hit when I picked up the phone. I called back a few minutes later to see what had happened and was informed that a bluefish had hit his line just as he made the call. At first light on that fishing pier the big pompano had gone on a feeding frenzy. Pompano to six pound were coming over the rail as well as a bunch of bluefish, snappers, ladyfish and jacks. The fish were feeding from under the mullet schools and eating jigs, Goofy jigs and sand fleas. A strong northeast wind was blowing due to the first cold front of the season. Temperatures had dropped but a few degrees but that didn't matter that northeasterly wind was pushing the fish south.
That's what we have been waiting for! We have had large schools of finger mullet in our bays since Hermine and if you fished with me during that time than I am know you had a blast catching those snook, small tarpon, sea trout and jacks. But now we will have Spanish mackerel, bluefish, pompano, ladyfish and many others feeding in North and South Bay and along the be aches. On Saturday I fished in South Bay and had shots at huge permits, barracudas and caught and released mutton snappers, gag and red groupers to 21 inches, giant needlefish, lots of bonnerthead sharks, nurse sharks, lemon sharks, bluerunners, yellow jacks, sting rays and landed mangrove snappers to four pounds, yellowtail snappers to three pounds, a six pound kingfish, porgies, and a mutton snapper that weighed six pounds. All of the fish but the mangrove snapper, yellowtail snapper and kingfish were caught in the bay. The others in the ocean. The fish ate live finger mullet and pilchards fished on the bottom and hooked to a Mustad Ultra Point #4 and #2 short shank hook.
I know this supposed to be a Flamingo report but the Park was closed due to the storm and by the time you read this report the Park should have reopened. Before the storm got near us fishing in Florida Bay in Flamingo my clients caught snook, redfish, sharks, jacks, ladyfish, snappers and tripletail and went one for three on tarpon. That kind of fishing will be waiting for you when we fish Flamingo in the near future.

If you read the Miami Herald in print or on the web you may have noticed that the Miami Herald has not had a Fishing Report for the past few weeks. I was asked by the Herald to stop writing that report. I was informed that the Sports Department had to release all of their free-lance writers due to a lack of funds. I am not sure if they will have a fulltimer pick up that article or not. Having grown up in South Florida I had the pleasure of reading Vic Dunaway, Jim Martinoff, Marty Klinkenberger, Jim Hardy and Sue Cocking's articles and fishing reports over my lifetime. I always looked forward to seeing those reports every Friday and Sunday and then Thursday and Sunday. It's sad that a fishing community like ours can't support a Fishing Report once a week. If I was asked to do it again I would not hesitate to do just that. I'm not sure if a letter to the editor or a call to Herald will make a difference but it may! Flamingo Fishing Forecast:
Ton's of baitfish are pouring into our Bays and sliding south along our beaches and the hungry predators are going nuts on them. That kind of action will be happening on and off for the next three months. Snook, tatrpon, redfish, sea trout, sharks. ladyfish, jacks, tripletail, cobia, pompano, bluefish, Spanish mackerel, black drum and sheepshead will all be feeding in FLamingo throughout the fall and into the winter. And the birding is getting better everyday in Flamingo.
