Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

I am with Ray Dame today, we started out netting some finger Mullet. It didn't take long and we had a couple Tarpon bites so Ray broke out his fly rod. Ray caught Trout, Jacks, Ladyfish and Sharks on fly but Tarpon never ate it and we had plenty around. I pulled up to a shallow flat and saw a couple but Ray's line got tangled up as the fish swam in front of us. I ran around Sandy Key and got in to the mother load of Tarpon! I rigged up a big Mullet and drifted it back, this poor Mullet got hit by Tarpon 3 times and finally was eaten by a big Lemon Shark. Every Mullet we put out got hit by Sharks and Ray caught every one, in between the Sharks we were getting shots at the Tarpon of fly. It was non stop action for a couple hours until the lightning started getting to close so we called it a day.

I am with Blake and Haley today from Louisiana, Blake wanted Tarpon because he catches allot of Red's at home. I set up on a flat with a channel running out and gave Blake a "Twitch n Rap". I had just netted Mullet and rigged one up for Haley and Blake had one hit the "Twitch n Rap" on first cast. The 50 lb. Tarpon jumped a couple times and was gone! Haley caught a few baby Black Tips, Trout and Jacks, Blake kept casting a caught something on every cast. I said it time to go so we ran out to the Gulf of Mexico where I had been finding Tarpon. The difference today is the west wind at @12 mph. No Tarpon rolling or busting so I decided to wait it out and keep my eyes open. We fished the edge of the grass flats where I put out my chum block. I handed Haley a popping cork rod with a finger Mullet and drifted the edge of the flat and Blake was throwing a fly. Haley caught trout on every cast and Blake was catching a few on the fly. The chum block was working all along then I noticed the pilchards were in there. I threw one time and got 50 jumbo sized Pilchards and put them to work. The winds died some and the Tarpon appeared in good numbers so we put a few baits out. We had a handful of Sharks eat our baits but Blake wants a Tarpon. I said lets go, as I was running to the next spot I saw fish free jumping. I pulled up down tide and set up a drift with my giant Pilchards. It didn't take very long and we had a big Tarpon Jumping behind the boat. After a couple minutes it was off . I rigged another bait and before it hit the water we were on again, Blake is pumped. A couple minutes go by and the Tarpon throws the circle hook, again! We sat out there a while and kept hoping for another bite, it was over so we headed in.
