Flamingo... Springtime Action

Capt. Benny Blanco
March 18, 2009
Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

My temperature gauge read 75 degrees in Whitewater Bay this morning... Spring is finally here! With no cold fronts on the horizon and rising water temps, the fish have become extremely active. I certainly took advantage of the changes this week... Snook were on fire and some large Redfish heartbreakers kept us wanting more. Although we used artificials here and there, the best bet this week was live Pilchards and Mullet.

Springtime can be very exciting. At any given time on a typical Spring Day you may find a pod of rolling Tarpon and just around the next point, a school of feeding Snook or Reds... opportunities are usually plentiful. I am constantly on full alert this time of year... and it usually pays off with a few bonus fish daily. Just this morning, a strike under a downed limb a few dozen yards up the shoreline turned into 15 bonus Snook before it was all said and done...

First time... Long time...
This week began with a first time Everglades Visitor and ended with a 30 year Vet of the Park back for the first time in a very long time. What a week for a either situation!

Brian Rogers, a local landscaping guru (www.avalon-gardens.net) met me bright and early for his first trip to Flamingo. As is with all first time visitor's, that maiden ride through Whitewater Bay is slightly overwhelming... something we regulars forget rather easily. He was blown away, by the beauty first and the fishing second. He would go on to catch his first Snook, Redfish & Trout, slamming a few times over. Congrats Brian, I am sure you'll be back very soon.

Mark Robitaille, Martin Memorial Hospital Administrator (and my Uncle) was invited on a trip with a mutual client, John Keller today. Mark introduced me to the Park many years ago, but had only been back once or twice since then. The rust showed... doing his best Jimmy Houston, crow-hop-hook-set impression, he busted off nearly every good fish that took his bait. After John put easily a couple dozen Snook in the boat, Mark finally got his groove back, adding more than a few himself. With "last bait" honors, Mark made it count, landing this over slot Redfish to seal his back country slam and send us home.

Chris, Dash, Jim, Elizabeth and Mary also enjoyed phenomenal fishing days this week. We averaged over 30 Snook each day, with lots of big fish mixed in... good numbers of Redfish and Trout also found their way aboard. It was truly a great week and it will only get better!
