Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report
Summer fishing has been getting better each day. Flamingo has been seeing very good numbers of snook from around the islands to the coastlines. People often ask when is the best time for snook and my answer is now. Warm, tropical temperatures are keeping them on the move and active. Artificial lures work well for them and I like throwing bucktail jigs with plastic trailers and topwater and subsurface hardbaits. Color is not as important as vibration or sonic attraction. Lures with some rattles and flash certainly have an advantage. Work them by jerk-stop and continue, do not let them sit idle for too long. Expect many mystery fish to bite. Trout, snapper, tarpon, jacks, and even goliath groupers are suckers for a well-placed snook lure. If it is weedy as it usually is in summer, go weedless with a jerbait or swimming plug with single hooks.
Flamingo Fishing Forecast:
A word on tides for the summer. Water is usually higher so this means running to flats that are often out-of-reach during winter and fall. I like getting around the crown of the flats and into skinny areas. Fewer boaters access these areas so you'll have plenty of action so long that you can get yourself out of what you got in. Don't committ if you are not sure what the tides are or the limits of your shallow water boat. Be especially careful not to damage any grass beds. Pole and be still. There will be many fish around.
Other alternatives for summer fishing are some of the closer, local spots. This means adjacent Biscayne National Park. We can target some of the same backcountry species here including redfish, for those interested. And the drive is not as far. This trip is a gas saver and productive I may add. August is a great month for flats permit. Nighttime or dusk fishing is also great in beating the heat. Tarpon can really turn on during the evening. This is a great time of the year to fly cast. Winds are relativley calm, fish are feeding, and action is good. Hope to see you on the water.
Target Species:
