Florida and Biscayne Bay

Capt. Ariel Cabrera

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Recently I had the good fortune to fish the Florida Bay for several days and found good all-around action. Although we had some weak tides, we still found snook, trout, tarpon, and redfish. Jacks, ladyfish, and sharks filled in the boring moments as we waited for a slow tide to turn. We used jigs and also the always reliable hook-up lures with live shrimp. Channel edges produced the best results for the trout and snook. Ladyfish and jacks bit well on grass flats, the one near First National Bank served us well.
In the deeper channels of Cape Sable I did notice some anglers were getting some drum but as water warms expect that bite to slow down. In the area however; there is still lots of other species to target making it worthwhile to stop and check the bite.
Just offshore there has been a decent run of spanish mackerel. Bring a chumbag and lots of spoons and jigs if you prefer to fish them with fakes. They are lots of fun and good eating. Plenty to go around.

Flamingo Fishing Forecast:

The Biscayne area has bit hit or miss for me. Not as warm as I like it for bonefish. It is sort of a transition time but as we get into March, the bones will be screaming. It will be prime time for them. Now some of the feeding schools are in slightly deeper water, mudding and rooting will give them away. Or if you prefer, fish them late on a grass flat and they should be up there on a rising tide.
