Frozen Flamingo Bite

Capt. Benny Blanco

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Bye, bye cold fronts and Hello Springtime! ... Or at least that is what every inshore Fisherman in South Florida is hoping. While the Groundhog predicted six more weeks of winter, Mr. Weatherman is professing the opposite... For once, I hope he is right. Fishing amongst the barrage of cold fronts has certainly not been easy… harder for some. The morning runs have been enough to send most packing and the fish are certainly not happy about water temperatures in the low 50's… Where do the fish go? Some say they move up on the flats to seek the warmth of the sun. Others say they move into the back country to find warmer mud bays & flats. I say, every year is different. In recent years, I have found myself on Florida Bay flats and also, deep in the back country… this year, as most know by now, we are finding greater concentrations of fish in the deep inlets, cuts & bays of the Gulf Coast. The formula for success in Winter is a moving target, which can make it difficult. However, with a little patience and persistence, you can find the right water and a great bite.

This week I had the pleasure of fishing with Sam Root, Founder of www.SaltyShores.com and good friend, Alex Coto. Something wasn't quite right. We had some sort of voodoo cast on us, because everything went wrong from the get go… steering issues, trolling motor issues, gas issues, skeg issues and the tide was over two hours late. Thankfully, the voodoo started to wear off and the tide finally started moving. Even when targeting deeper water, the temperature gauge read 51 degrees! Luckily, it did not affect the bite too much, as we caught several Snook right off the bat. Although, we didn't see any large fish that day, Alex did manage a very decent slot Snook.

Later, we headed way North in search of the now very sought after Redfish and Black Drum. After a couple of quick stops and only a decent Trout to show for it, I was getting slightly frustrated. The Drum were playing hard to get, no doubt… but, I wasn't done. With the boat positioned between two oyster bars and a hard moving channel, our luck changed… the Redfish started cooperating. We caught several, this time with Sam catching the two larger, upper slot fish. It was certainly a relief to see doubled over rods and smiles across the boat.

Sam, thanks for another photographer tutorial. It is always good when you can learn from the best… I'm looking forward to our next adventure. With the Boat Show in town and five charters, I'm sure next week's report will be a great one! Until then, best wishes…
