Full moon = tough fishing!

Capt. Jim Hobales

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

060909
I went over to the west coast today to pre fish for a tournament that's this weekend. We were looking for Redfish and went to some new spots and then hit our usual spot. It wasn't a good bite we had a handful of Snook but the full moons effect was evident, we were using big Threadfin Herring and only managed of few fish.

I am fishing with Al, Alonso and Steve toady, I launched out of Islamorada today doing a group trip with Capt. Benny Blanco. I was all set to fish ocean side for Tarpon/Permit/Bonefish but the guys wanted to fish the back country of Flamingo. We started off quickly with a couple big Trout while fishing a giant Mullet mud, there was some big fish busting in it but we couldn't get them to hit.
We worked hard and they caught fish all on artificial, Snappers, Ladyfish, Trout, Jacks but it was tough. Alonso had a big Jack and Al's rod doubled over while working lures in some moving water but he just wasn't fast enough. We ended up the day by catching some big Cuda's on the way back to Islamorada, every cast for an hour was almost a hook up. I am glad this full moon is over it was tougher than usual.

Flamingo Fishing Forecast:

Fishing should get back on track for this week end with the waning moon. There is plenty of bait and the Snook have made an an appearance on Caple Sable shorelines.

Target Species:

Tarpon/Snook/Permit/Bonefish
