Hot then cold but fish bite!

Capt. Jim Hobales
February 21, 2013
Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

021413

I am with Sam Rose and his friend Charlie who's in from Morocco. I picked them up at Fischer Island at 7 AM and by 7:15 Charlie had a 60 lb Tarpon hooked up. The fish pulled and jumped, Charlie was screaming he had never hooked anything this big before. The fish made a couple moves and got around a buoy, I tried to get it unwrapped but the line fraid and broke. We had one other bite and then moved into the Cut where we caught Mutton Snappers, Flounder, Yellowtails, Jacks, Blue Runners, Mangrove Snappers, Grunts, Porgies and a 5 Lb. Hogfish. I had 7 dozen Shrimp and we went thru all of them in 4 hours, it was a really good morning for catching fish. Sam asked if I would clean the Hogfish so he could have it for lunch so we headed in.

I am fishing Flamingo with Howard Kite from Chicago, it is cold and windy with super low tides. I launched in the back country and hit all my spots working my way to the coast and never had a bite until 11:00 AM. The water temp was 58 degrees so we need sun and no clouds and we got into some really muddy shallow water. Howard worked hard all morning and finally caught a Snook on a "Twitch n Rap" on a windy point, he followed up with 3 more on that spot. On the next spot he got hit pretty quick by a 24 inch Snook, the tide was at its last hour of falling and the fish were eating. We had a few Snook on lures and then we went to Shrimp and that when we got into some good numbers. We caught 15 Snook and a nice Redfish and missed a few also. The bite just stopped so we moved back inside the bay and caught a Slam of Snook, Redfish and Trout to end the day.
