Hot Fishing

Capt. Ariel Cabrera
August 15, 2008
Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

This is the time of year to go fish. Few boats and the bite is on in the backcountry. Sure it's hot and sometimes there are those inevitable afternoon storms but the gamble is worth the price. The tarpon and snook bite continues steady. At Flamingo Ron Peters caught seven snook, two Goliath, and a tarpon. He had a blast and said the action was incredible. Michael Wright got into a sawfish that went about seven feet with bill and two reds, all sightfished. The fall fishing will be spectacular. We have had lots of rain to keep flushing and cool surface waters.

The Gulf has had good action with snapper and floating tails. Keep on the lookout. Some regulars are also reporting a good permit bite offshore and inshore. Many times a rare mackerel will also be around. Expect lots of jack crevalles. They are very dependable and are lots of fun. I like throwing jigs with plastic tails or subsurface hard baits.

Flamingo Fishing Forecast:

The backcountry of Key Largo has also had worthwhile action. Tarpon, jacks, and some trout have been responding early mornings. Access is a little more difficult than before but still worthwhile. And in Biscayne Bay I have had good luck lobstering. I have also been seeing some permit around. You need to have that crab at hand.

Nighttime fishing is a good option because of the heat. Bugs suits and repellent are a must and keep to the open. The bridge areas of the upper keys, card sound, and even Miami are all good choices. Head out to reefs or wrecks for even better results.
