Hot Summer Fishing and Boating

Capt. Ariel Cabrera
June 14, 2009
Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Summer fishing began with wet weather and some wild storms. Water flow constantly affects the coastal Everglades and even urban and bay fishing. This is an important note to observe. And as we move forward into the heat of the summer you'll want to plan your trips early and then late, for best results.

Everglades fishing can be good all day but there will be superb action very early in the morning when the tarpon begin to roll for air. Right now the snook are hitting hardbaits, jigs, and topwater baits. Live baiting is also good but I like to cover more area by using artificials. Go with a reasonably stout pole and good line and get them to the boat quick. The bull sharks are very fast and aggressive and they will take the snook for a lunch-they don't have to follow the closed season rules.

Flamingo Fishing Forecast:

Biscayne area has had a good tarpon bite. Just south of Government Cut and Bear Cut areas have had rollers and takers. After that we are bonefishing, which has been good if we work the tide correctly. In between there are tons of snapper, barracudas, and other species. I've been getting the urge to take a plunge and spearfish lately-guess it's the hunter in me. Great time for hogfish. And in my opinion, August is one of the best months for permit. Conditions have been calm lately. Get live crabs because any fish that eats one is a good one. We have had everything take crabs from porgies to permit.

Overall, conditions have been favorable for getting back on the water. I've been seeing lots of boaters out there though not all have been the fishing crowd. In the bay closer to Miami I am seeing the "Miami Vice" party crowd quite a bit with the go-fast boats. Keep a safe distance and go to where the fish are biting.

Keep your boat tuned up. Check batteries, pumps, through-hull fittings, and engine water pressure. Read the gauges and make careful observations. If you are having problems call me. Getting a boat or questions about fishing or boating, call me. I am offering special rates for the summer on marine survey reports and Biscayne Bay flats fishing trips/fly-fishing lessons.
